III. Plotting the Stars
Prospective School Research
“Set your course by the stars, not by the lights of every passing ship.”
— Omar N. Bradley, Speech by American General during WWII (1948)
Once you receive your Long List, you’ll have dozens of schools to explore - an exciting but potentially overwhelming task. To help streamline your research, we’ve crated worksheets designed to guide and focus your efforts. The goal for this school-specific research is threefold:
Discovery - To help you learn about the wide range of universities and programs available and, ideally, to spark genuine excitement about the possibilities ahead.
Preparation – To equip you for meaningful in-person visits. For example, if you come across a professor whose work excites you, this research can help you reach out and possibly arrange a meeting while you’re on campus.
Strategy – To collect detailed, well-organized information that will support the writing of your supplemental essays in the fall of your senior year. These essays are tailored to each school and benefit significantly from concrete details and first-hand impressions, so doing your homework before campus visits is essential.
