Middle School at Grey Eyed Owl
Building Strong Academic Foundations

At Grey Eyed Owl, Middle School is more than a bridge between childhood and adolescence; it is the bedrock upon which a lifetime of intellectual and personal growth is built.
Our Middle School programs are designed to cultivate not only subject mastery in reading, writing, scientific inquiry, and problem solving but also the critical habits of mind — focus, resilience, organization, and curiosity — that will serve our young owls for years to come.
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.”
-Plutarch
These are the years when a student begins to glimpse at the full expanse of their intellectual landscape. Algebra I, Medieval History, the laws of motion, the rhythm of a well-turned phrase — in Middle School, ideas gain shape and depth.
The ISEE, SSAT, and HSPT are gateways to opportunity. We believe these rigorous exams should be approached not with fear, but with the cleverness and bravery of quiet mastery.
Summer months provide fertile ground for inspiration — a time to chase curiosity, spark new interests, and gather the early kindling of future passions.
We make sure every application is not only polished and well-prepared, but also deeply personal—reflecting the student’s authentic voice and values. Our goal is to help each student find the right High School that will empower them to flourish.

Middle School Coursework Tutoring
Middle School marks a threshold — a time when students step beyond rote memorization and begin to engage with the fertile landscape of electrifying ideas.
Whether it’s plotting out linear equations in Algebra, grappling with the causes and consequences of the Protestant Reformation, memorizing the nucleotide codes of DNA, or encountering the beloved characters of Charles Dickens for the first time, Middle School students begin to engage with their curriculum at a deeper level of critical inquisition.

Middle School Test Prep Tutoring
Grey Eyed Owl test preparation is not a scramble toward the best possible score, but a formative battle on the noble quest toward intellectual excellence.
With each question tackled and each problem solved, students unravel deeper layers of understanding, not merely to pass a test, but to forge critical thinking skills that will carry them through the complexities of academia and beyond.
The GEO approach to Test Prep is both meticulous and expansive, designed to transform an essential challenge into a triumphant leap towards maturity. We guide our students through a structured, three-phase program that not only prepares them for the test itself but builds a resilient foundation for all future academic endeavors.
Just as Oedipus confronted the cunning Sphinx to gain entry to Thebes, so must our students face their own tests as gateways to higher learning and self-discovery.
Our signature three-phase test prep program is designed as a deliberate and comprehensive pilgrimage, elevating our students’ academic prowess no matter what test they are working towards.
Phase 1 - Comprehensive Review of Concepts
Beginning in the Autumn of 7th grade, Phase 1 introduces students to high-level material they may not yet have encountered in school. Using specialized resources, students gain exposure to the advanced concepts tested on the ISEE, SSAT, and HSPT. This early phase gives tutors the opportunity to assess foundational gaps and begin closing them before more rigorous work begins.
Phase 2 - Rigorous Practice Drills & Content Mastery
In the Spring and Summer of 7th grade, Phase 2 turns toward focused skill-building through intensive drills. Students deepen their understanding of the material, reinforce key concepts, and learn to apply their knowledge across a wide range of test scenarios.
Phase 3 - Test Taking Strategies & Refined Performance
Running through the Autumn of 8th grade, Phase 3 centers on strategy and stamina. Students complete timed practice exams to simulate real test-day conditions. The goal is to refine pacing, sharpen test-day judgment, and instill the confidence needed to excel under pressure.

Middle School Summer Enrichment
Summer is not a lull in the learning rhythm — it’s an invitation to recalibrate, reignite, and rediscover.
We treat these months as a precious opportunity to light the academic lantern in ways that feel exhilarating, personal, and profound. For some students, it’s the perfect moment to build back the basics and regain confidence. For others, it’s a runway to soar ahead, diving into High School material with the luxury of time and space. And for many, it’s a season of inspiration — the spark of a new idea, the joy of a new subject, the freedom to pursue the curious and the bold.
-
For students who might feel they are lagging behind, summer becomes a crucial juncture to fortify their academic foundation. Grey Eyed Owl’s bespoke remedial courses are meticulously designed to rebuild and reinforce core concepts, ensuring that students regain their confidence and footing in essential subjects. These summer sessions provide a focused, distraction-free environment where students can address areas of weakness under the guidance of our expert educators. With personalized attention and tailored instruction, students emerge from the summer not just caught up, but reinvigorated and ready to face new academic challenges.
-
For the ambitious scholar, our summer offerings can serve as a launchpad into advanced studies. Grey Eyed Owl provides preview courses for upcoming honors and advanced placement classes, allowing students to familiarize themselves with challenging materials at a measured pace. This proactive approach enables students to grasp and engage with complex topics more deeply during the regular school year. As they encounter these subjects in their formal education, they do so with a distinct advantage, having already navigated the initial learning curve. This head start is crucial for those aiming for top performance and mastery, fostering long-term retention, sophisticated application of knowledge, and a more nuanced understanding of the curriculum.
-
During the summer, Grey Eyed Owl intensifies focus on preparing students for major entrance exams such as the ISEE, SSAT, and HSPT – tests that often include content not typically encountered until the latter years of Middle School or early High School. By mastering this advanced material over the summer, students enhance their test-taking skills and comprehension significantly, positioning them well ahead of their peers when the testing season arrives in early winter. This strategic preparation not only boosts their performance on the exams but also strengthens their foundational knowledge in key academic areas like Math and English.
-
The transition to High School is a significant step in a student’s academic journey. To ensure readiness, our summer programs emphasize not only academic preparation but also the development of executive functioning skills essential for High School success. Students engage in intensive sessions that prepare them for the rigors of High School courses, learning to manage their time effectively, organize their work, and approach complex problems with enhanced analytical skills. These sessions are designed to instill confidence and independence, equipping students with the tools they need to thrive in the more demanding academic environment of High School and beyond.
-
Beyond standard coursework, Grey Eyed Owl’s summer programs also include a range of enrichment opportunities designed to spark curiosity and inspire a love of learning. Whether it’s a deep dive into trigonometry, a creative writing workshop, or a philosophical inquiry into the great minds of history, each course is an adventure in itself, crafted to expand the unique interests and intellectual horizons of our students.
