II. Adjusting the Ballast
Building a Balanced College List
“It is not down in any map; true places never are.”
— Herman Melville, Moby Dick (1851)
Our initial intake conversations serve as the foundation for developing a Long List of prospective schools, organized into four categories: Big Reach, Reach, Target, and Foundation. This broad cross-section of up to 50 candidates will be a collaborative creation between you and your Navigational Crew and is intended to evolve over time.
As you progress through 11th grade, we will assist in refining the Long List down to a Medium List of roughly 30 candidates. Finally, by end of 11th grade, we will whittle down to a Short List of about 20 schools, with an emphasis on the 12-16 schools where we will ultimately apply. Particular attention will be paid to the Reach and Target categories, which will be the primary focus of our application strategy.
These living, breathing, ever-changing lists live in your personalized GEO Student Drive. The summer before senior year, we use the Short List to determine a prudent yet powerful final application strategy, calculating which schools should be positioned as ED, EA, and RD applications.
