XIV. The Captain’s Table
Preparing for College Interviews
“It is at the captain’s table, under the soft glow of the cabin lamp, that decisions are made not by the compass alone, but by the heart.”
— Jules Verne, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870)
College interviews provide a unique opportunity for your student to step beyond the formal boundaries of their application and establish a personal connection with a school. Think of them as a meeting at the captain’s table, where the story of your journey is conveyed not through the charts and logs of test scores and GPAs, but through the heartfelt narrative of genuine dialogue. While interviews are not always offered and are rarely the deciding factor in an admissions decision, they allow your student to highlight aspects of their character, values, and background that might not be fully captured on paper. Just as importantly, they offer a chance for your student to engage with the school's community and assess whether it truly aligns with their academic and personal goals.
At Grey Eyed Owl, we help students prepare thoughtfully for these conversations—equipping them not just to answer questions, but to tell their story with clarity, confidence, and heart.
