XII. Hoisting the Colors

Supplemental Essays

“The ship at sea sends up her flare, a burst of light amid the dark,
a desperate call to the unseen shore.”

— Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse (1927)

Supplemental essays provide additional opportunities to express your student’s unique worldview to admissions committees and help colleges get to know them better. Unlike the personal statement, which focuses broadly on one’s identity and experiences, supplemental essays are school-specific. They are the chance to articulate why your student is a strong match for a particular institution. An admissions committee deeply concerns itself with how each and every student might add to the intellectual, personal, and cultural richness of their campus. Supplemental essays are an important part of demonstrating how your student checks these boxes.
