X. The Ship’s Log

Crafting a Standout Resume

“The ship’s log was not merely a record of wind and weather; it was a testament to the crew’s endurance, their trials, and the sea’s ever-changing face.”

— Patrick O’Brian, Master and Commander (1969)

While not always a formal requirement for college applications, a résumé can offer a clear, organized snapshot of a student’s accomplishments—particularly for those with extensive extracurricular involvement, work experience, or unique achievements. At GEO, we help every student create a polished résumé, regardless of whether their chosen schools formally request one. We ideally start this process the summer before 9th or 10th grade, in order to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the student profile, allowing for plenty of time to fill any important gaps.

Beyond serving as a valuable college admissions tool, résumé writing is a fundamental skill every young adult should master. Having a well-crafted résumé on hand also ensures you're ready for unexpected opportunities—such as when a family friend offers to write a last-minute recommendation. In those moments, a thoughtful résumé can provide essential context and make the process smoother, more personal, and more effective.
