High School English

Grey Eyed Owl’s High School English curriculum invites students into the world of great ideas — and teaches them to speak back. Drawing from the literary canon and a carefully selected array of nonfiction texts, our courses are designed to develop advanced skills in reading, writing, grammar, and verbal reasoning.

Throughout High School, students explore works of increasing complexity, refining their interpretive acumen while building the analytical tools needed for high-level academic discourse and success on standardized tests. Vocabulary study becomes a journey through etymology and precision, while essay writing evolves into an act of intellectual synthesis and persuasion. From Socratic seminars to polished research papers, every assignment is an invitation to think more clearly, write more powerfully, and read with greater depth and joy.

  • In High School, students engage deeply with works of literature that span time, culture, and genre — from Sophocles to Shakespeare, Austen to Morrison. They learn to trace themes, analyze character and structure, and interpret the subtle relationship between form and meaning. Through close reading and guided annotation, students cultivate a refined literary sensibility and the analytical fluency to write and speak with precision and insight.

  • Our students approach nonfiction as both readers and thinkers, dissecting arguments, evaluating evidence, and unpacking rhetoric. Texts range from historical speeches and philosophical treatises to modern essays and memoirs, providing both breadth and relevance. This work builds critical reasoning and prepares students to navigate the layered complexity of argument-driven writing across disciplines.

  • Grammar at GEO is not a list of rules, but a set of tools — empowering students to write clearly, revise confidently, and recognize the patterns behind powerful prose. We review fundamentals, introduce advanced structures, and address the finer points of usage and style. With an emphasis on application and analysis, students gain mastery not only in mechanics but in elegance.

  • Our vocabulary program is both classical and contemporary, drawing from root words, affixes, and context clues to expand students’ linguistic range. We emphasize academic and test-critical terms, rhetorical and literary vocabulary, and precise word choice for formal writing. This study deepens comprehension and strengthens articulation, equipping students to read and write at the highest level.

  • Students sharpen their thinking by speaking — practicing reasoned dialogue, persuasive rhetoric, and civil disagreement. From formal debates to Socratic discussions, we cultivate intellectual curiosity, active listening, and the courage to articulate one’s ideas clearly and respectfully. These sessions foster both confidence and command — skills essential for college seminars, interviews, and life.

  • The craft of writing is central to our High School English curriculum. Students progress from timed analytical essays to multi-draft research papers, learning to construct compelling arguments, support them with evidence, and revise with discipline and care. With feedback and mentoring, they develop not just technical fluency, but voice — emerging as thinkers with something to say and the skills to say it well.
